Syrian Head of state Bashar Assad and King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia paid a historic visit to Lebanon.

Assad and Abdullah arrived in Lebanon Friday for an hours-long visit, their first since 2002.

Lebanese President Michel Suleiman held a tripartite meeting with Saudi and Syrian heads of state and then hosted a lunch attended by Lebanese politicians.

In side meetings, King Abdullah visited Hariri's house, and President Assad conferred with pro-Syrian Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri and Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Mualem met Hezbollah lawmakers.

In a statement released after the meetings, stability and peace in Lebanon was underlined and all political parties in the country are invited to pay attention to these principles.

Solidarity of all people living in Lebanon also emphasized in the statement.

Assad's visit was his first to Beirut since the bombing that killed Hariri and sparked an outcry in Lebanon.

However, since Hariri’s son Saad Hariri became prime minister last year, he has dropped his anti-Syrian rhetoric and has visited Damascus several times to forge a rapprochement with Assad, who has also improved relations with Western powers and developed close links with Turkey.

The Saudi monarch was last in the Lebanese capital for a 2002 Arab summit, when he was still Crown Prince, and he is the first Saudi king to come to Lebanon for decades.

Meanwhile, Reuter’s news agency said that Lebanon's press on Saturday appeared unimpressed by the outcome of a historic Syria-Saudi-Lebanon summit, saying it failed to address key issues linked to rising tensions in the country.
